This year marks the significant milestone of the 30th anniversary of LGIS. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the remarkable journey we have undertaken together over the past three decades. Since our founding in 1995, LGIS has evolved from a practical response to emerging risks into a pioneering mutual scheme that proudly serves the diverse needs of Western Australia’s local governments. This anniversary is not just a celebration of our history; but it is a testament to the collective strength, resilience, and shared purpose of WA local government.
This milestone reminds us of the vital role that collaboration, trust, and a shared vision have played in shaping our journey; qualities that continue to underpin everything we do today. As we look back with pride, we also look forward with renewed purpose. The achievements of the past serve as a foundation for the future, inspiring us to build on our legacy of innovation, partnership, and dedicated service.
As we embark on this next chapter, our focus remains on building a resilient, forward-thinking, sustainable scheme that anticipates future risks and opportunities. Our collective efforts – driven by teamwork, trust, and shared commitment are what will sustain our legacy and ensure LGIS remains a trusted partner for generations to come.
Looking ahead, our new strategic plan reaffirms our dedication to continuous improvement and innovation. We are committed to strengthening our services, expanding our risk management capabilities, and fostering deeper, more meaningful partnerships with our members.
This strategic direction ensures LGIS remains responsive to the evolving needs of local governments, providing sustainable, tailored solutions. Without extensive collaboration with our members, the innovation and reliability we have been able to deliver simply would not be possible.
Following our anniversary feature, this edition explores critical safety and risk management topics which are constantly shaping the future of our sector. With recent claims related to hazardous manual tasks on the rise, ergonomic awareness and injury prevention are more vital than ever. We highlight practical strategies, including expert-led videos on machinery setup and healthy habits to help reduce manual handling risks (page 10).
We also address the growing concerns surrounding e-scooter safety. As e-ridable popularity increases, so does the importance of asset management, contractual risk, and community trust (page 18). Additionally, September’s Great West Aussie Adventure is just around the corner. We strongly encourage all our members to get moving and help us promote health and wellbeing across the sector (page 14).
In our Ask an Expert segment, we delve into the complexities of prematurely stopping income compensation payments (page 24) as well as shed light on workers’ compensation claims, focusing on the key question of why we defer a claim (page 26).
Thank you once again to all our members, partners, and staff for your ongoing trust and dedication. Your commitment to working together has been the driving force behind our achievements and will continue to shape our future. As we celebrate 30 years of partnership, progress, and shared success, we look forward to many more years of service, innovation, and collaboration.
